PortraitGeneral Sir John D'Arcy Anderson GBE KCB DSO (1908-1988), born in Downpatrick, was commissioned into the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards in 1929. During the Second World War, he served in France, the Middle East and Italy.

He was appointed General Officer Commanding 11th Armoured Division in the British Army of the Rhine (BAOR) in 1955 and then Chief of Staff at Headquarters Northern Army Group and British Army of the Rhine in 1956. He was appointed Director of the Royal Armoured Corps in 1958, Director General Military Training in 1959, Deputy Chief of the Imperial General Staff in 1961, and Military Secretary in 1963. His final appointment was Commandant of the Imperial Defence College in 1966 before he retired in 1968. From 1962 to 1967 he had been Colonel of the 5th Royal Inniskilling Dragoon Guards.

General Sir John was the first Colonel Commandant of The Ulster Defence Regiment from 1969 - 1977 and was also appointed High Sheriff of County Down in 1974.
