1 R IRISH deploys to Iraq

Following two weeks leave, the 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment, commanded by Lt Col M P Hartigan deployed with 470 personnel to Iraq between 4 - 10 July and assumed the role of Rear Operations Battle Group (ROBG) on 17 July 2005. The ROBG tasks included guarding the Shaba Logistics Base and protection the sustainment convoys, guarding the Divisional Detention Facility and patrolling an operational box area around the Logistics Base. One company was also tasked to Baghdad to deliver force protection to the ‘Headquarters Senior British Military Representative (Iraq)’.

During September, Lt Col M P Hartigan handed over command to Lt Col M A McGovern.
