5th (Volunteer) Battalion The Royal Irish Rangers, Final Annual Camp 1992, Wales.

Event
Fri, 10/09/1992 - Sun, 10/25/1992

Rgr Badge5 RANGERS, commanded by Lt Col R G Rowe R IRISH, attended the Battalion's final Annual Camp at Sennybridge Training Area, Wales from 9-25 October 1992.

The 1990 United Kingdom Defence Review, titled 'Options for Change', directed the restructuring of the British Armed Forces. The Royal Irish Rangers became the Royal Irish Regiment and the regiment's Territorial Battalions, which retained the title 'Rangers' were to be reduced from two to one. A series of measures leading to that included a period of preparation by 5 RANGERS which became Non-Operational on 1 April 1992 and Non-Effective from 1 October 1992. The battalion was to reduce to one rifle company based on Newtownards.

This meant that the aim of Annual Camp was to concentrate on the preparation of individuals through training cadres for Junior NCOs, soldiers, section commanders, mortar, Milan, signals, medical and catering. Cadres were deployed into the field for one week and this was followed by a 48 hour exercise controlled and co-ordinated by the Second-in-Command.

Lt Col Rowe handed over command of 5 RANGERS to the Second-in-Command, Major R J Telford TD, on the final day of Camp 1992.
