86th Regiment styled 'Leinster Regiment of Foot'.

Thursday, 24 August, 1809

A notice confirming the retitling of the 86th Regiment was gazetted by the War Office entry dated 27 October in the London Gazette of 24 - 28 October 1809. It stated:

'HIS MAJESTY has been pleased to order, that the 86th Regiment of Foot shall in future be styled,
"the 86th (or Leinster) Regiment of Foot".'

However, despite the Regiment's records and Richard Cannon's 'Historical Records of the British Army' giving October 1806 as the date of the change of title to 'Leinster Regiment', the actual warrant bears the date 24 August 1809 with the annotation 'Approved G.R.' written by King George III's own hand.
