Inniskillings fighting at Ypres-Comines Canal
Retreat to Dunkirk
The Battle Honour YPRES-COMINES CANAL was awarded to the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers for actions there by the 2nd Battalion during the British Expeditionary Force's withdrawal to Dunkirk. However, after the Second World War the Regiment did not select the distinction to be emblazoned on The Queen's Colours.
One of those recommended for a Military Medal for his conduct being a source of inspiration and encouragement to the men around him was 6980116 Fusilier Campbell W. He was eventually approved a Mention in Despatches (MID) for his actions at Hollebeke on 27 May, where, although wounded in the chest, he continued to fire his weapon for nearly one hour, during a determined German attack, until ordered to withdraw.
