Denis Moore was born in Simla, India on 15 March 1909 and died on 16 February 1987, just short of reaching his 78th year.

He was educated at Wellington College and the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst from where he was commissioned into The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers in 1929. In 1935 he attended the Royal Military College of Science where he took the exacting pre-war advanced course in science and technology. In 1939 he attended the Staff College in Quetta, India (now in Pakistan).

He was in India at the outbreak of the Second World War and in 1941 was selected for a special mission to North Persia with another officer where they were involved in negotiations with the Russians for the evacuation of General Anders and his Polish compatriots through Persia. This was followed by a posting to Headquarters Eighth Army in North Africa were he was involved with technical and scientific intelligence.

After the war, Denis Moore was appointed second-in-command of the 3rd Battalion The Parachute Regiment before assuming command of the 1st Battalion The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers in 1951. He later commanded 47 Infantry Brigade of the Territorial Army before being appointed Deputy Commandant of the Royal Military College of Science. This was followed by two further appointments in the War Office dealing with weapon development and equipment. His final military appointment, in the rank of Major General, was to Germany as Chief of the Joint Service Liaison Staff at Headquarters of the British Army of the Rhine (BAOR) after which he retired in 1963.

He was appointed Colonel of The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers in succession to Brigadier Eric Moore in 1960 and held this appointment until 1966. He retired to Mountfield in County Tyrone where he became very involved in local forestry. He was appointed a council member and Trustee of the Royal Forestry Society and was chairman of the Ulster Timber Growers Organization for many years. He was High Sheriff for County Tyrone in 1969 and was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant in 1974.
