Tighe-Wood MC, Major W D
The following is the text from Army Form W.3121 describing the date, place and action for which P/No 100901 W/Capt (T/Maj) William Davidson Tighe-Wood was recommended for an award by the Commanding Officer of the 2nd Battalion The Royal Ulster Rifles, Lieutenant Colonel I C Harris, in June 1944 and forwarded through the chain of command for approval. Major Tighe-Wood was awarded the Military Cross (MC) and the award was promulgated in the Supplement to The London Gazette dated 31 August 1944.
Maj TIGHE-WOOD was in command of A Coy, 2 RUR on 9 June
1944 when the Bn attacked the Germans at CAMBES. The
approach to the objective is open country practically
devoid of cover. This was covered by enemy MG, mortar
and artillery fire. Maj TIGHE-WOOD led his company to the
objective in front of which there was a terrific barrage of
enemy mortar fire. The Coy advanced through this barrage
without a moment’s hesitation though they suffered heavily,
and captured the first objective. The enemy continued to
bring down intense fire on this objective, but despite
the fact that all his platoon commanders were killed or
wounded Maj TIGHE-WOOD, by his example of coolness and
determined leadership succeeded in establishing his Coy
on the second objective and drove the enemy off. Still
under very heavy fire he conducted the consolidation of
the position without any regard for his own safety, By this
brave and determined leadership, Maj TIGHE-WOOD was largely
responsible for the success of the Bn’s attack. This officer
was previously recommended on 6 June 1940 for the award
of the M.C.
